Hyannis is the Cape’s commercial centre and has plenty of hotels, restaurants and shops. Nearby towns such as Sandwich and Falmouth have an historic feel and are very photogenic, while close to the furthest tip of the Cape, Provincetown is far more flamboyant and is home to one of the liveliest gay scenes in the North East USA. The 40 mile stretch of the Cape Cod National Seashore is dotted with unspoilt beaches, dunes and forests, an area that John F Kennedy set up to preserve the Cape’s character.

Getting to Cape Cod is easy with a rental car, and your journey here from Boston can also take in historic Newport in neighbouring Rhode Island, an easy detour that’s very worthwhile.

Cape Cod

Cape Cod is a beautiful area of peaceful beaches, historic villages and a growing arts scene, all located less than an hour and a half drive from buzzing Boston, but a world away in all other respects. The Cape itself will take you around an hour to drive, from crossing the Cape Cod Canal to reaching its tip at Provincetown, but there’s plenty to see and do on the way. The offshore islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket can both be reached from Hyannis.
