“Shanghai epitomes modern China and is totally fascinating - it;s a great place to start as it’s fairly easy to deal with too!”
What to do in Shanghai
Central Shanghai is a mix of modern and traditional. The Bund is the famous waterfront of colonial buildings, while the French Concession area is awash with Art Deco buildings. Ultra-modern Pudong was marshland but has developed in to the new financial and commercial hub of the city, and is home to some of the most dramatic buildings. Away from Shanghai, a few nights in each of Nanjing, Hangshou and Suzhou will allow you to explore unique watertowns in this less visited region.
Where to stay in Shanghai
Hotels in Shanghai generally offer high standards, with international chains such as Shangri-La and Radisson being available. Most properties are located on the West Bank, with many close to The Bund or Nanjing Road. Options in Pudong are also available. Away from Shanghai, options are more limited although standards remain good.
Holiday ideas to Shanghai
It's easy to visit Shanghai as a city break, or holidays to Shanghai can include other areas of China too, as Shanghai is a great location to combine on a longer twin centre holiday or multi centre holiday to China. Combine Shanghai with Beijing, Xi'an and other areas of China. The towns of Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou can be combined with Shanghai and other areas of China, while Yangtze River cruises can be incorporated in to various China holidays. We also have a range of touring holidays to China that include Shanghai and the Yangtze River.
The powerhouse of Shanghai is one of China's most exciting cities, and nowhere is the Country's development more evident than here. Ultra-modern skyscrapers stand next to traditional quarters, while designer boutiques rub shoulders with old markets. Inland, the towns of the Yangtze such as Nanjing, Hangshou and Suzhou offer an insight into a more traditional way of life.
