Darren, your guide to Osaka from Escape Worldwide.
“Osaka to me is more relaxed than Tokyo and less prim than Kyoto - the bright lights of Dotonbori are pure Japan”

Vibrant Osaka avoids Tokyo’s frenzy and Kyoto’s primness, and remains straightforward and hard-working. A far more gentle introduction to Japan than Tokyo, Osaka has plenty of interest and some of the best food in the country, with plenty of regional delicacies.
What to do in Osaka
Osaka is an easy city to explore, and while is doesn't have the culture of Kyoto or the classic sights of Tokyo, there’s plenty of interest. The highlight for many visitors is the neon-lit Dotonbori district, which screams ‘Japan’ like nowhere else. The Umeda Sky Building offers great views across the city, but getting there is half the fun, while the Castle and riverside parks are charming and detached from the hectic pace of life elsewhere. Universal Studios Japan is close to Osaka, plus it’s also a good base for a day visit to Nara, home to the Great Buddha - along with a further 7 World Heritage sites.
Where to stay in Osaka
There are two main areas for hotels in Osaka - Umeda and the area around Osaka JR Station, and Namba which is includes the Dotonbori district and main shopping areas. Both have excellent rail links, plus the subway links the two areas in a few minutes.
Holiday ideas to Osaka
We’d suggest spending a night or two in Osaka as part of a wider itinerary to Japan, as you can take in the main highlights of the city in a fairly short time. As the city’s main Shinkansen station - Shin Osaka - is one of the main hubs of the whole JR network you’re bound to find yourself passing through once or twice! Osaka’s Kansai airport also has excellent connections to other areas within Asia, so combining Osaka with other countries is also possible.
