What to do in the Winelands & Whale Coast
What else to do in the Winelands than to drink wine?! There are numerous wineries that open their doors to visitors, and there’s even a wine tram in Franschhoek so you can leave the car at your hotel! This region is also renowned for its fine food (at low prices), while the stunning scenery is ideal for walking off some of your excesses. At the coast, Hermanus is the heart of whale watching country, and boat trips can be arranged here - or just stand on the cliff top in the town centre and watch from there! Further down the coast, Gansbaai is famous for its shark diving.
Where to stay in the Winelands & Whale Coast
There’s a good selection of hotels throughout the Winelands and Whale Coast area, as well as other areas of the Western Cape. Accommodation in the Winelands area is focused on the three towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, with Stellenbosch having most options. Hermanus on the Whale Coast is the heart of hotel options here, while small towns such as Montagu, Arniston and Swellendam offer options for the journey from the Winelands to the Garden Route.
Holiday ideas to the Winelands & Whale Coast
South Africa’s Winelands can be visited on a day trip from Cape Town, but to do the area justice allow a few days - if you’re on a fly-drive it’s a good idea to have a car-free day! The Winelands and Whale Coast are ideally located en route from Cape Town to the Garden Route, and the driving is easy, or head back to Cape Town and fly on to destinations further afield such as Durban, Kruger or the islands of the Indian Ocean.
Beautiful vineyards with a mountain backdrop and charming towns such as Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are all waiting to be discovered just an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Its combination of wonderful scenery and fantastic food and wine, along with high quality accommodation, makes the Cape Winelands an ideal area for a few nights’ relaxation. Hermanus is South Africa’s premier viewing site of the majestic Southern Right Whale; from June to November they can be seen close to the shore. Route 62 offers a wonderful scenic alternative to the N2 highway between Cape Town and the Garden Route while the Little Karoo is splendid in its stark beauty and semi-arid desert landscape.
