SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 - UK to Kruger National Park
Fly from London to Kruger, arriving next day.
Day 2 - Kruger National Park
On arrival in to Kruger airport you’ll be met and transferred to your chosen accommodation, for a three night stay - Kruger covers a large area both covering the national park itself and also private game reserves outside of the park, and there’s a great range of accommodation options here. Durations are flexible too, of course.
Days 3-4 - Kruger National Park
Spend the next few days on safari, with game drives to explore the area in the early morning and late afternoon. This area of South Africa is home to an amazing diversity of wildlife, so you’re likely to see a huge amount of wildlife.
Day 5 - Kruger National Park to Port Elizabeth
You’ll be transferred back to Kruger airport for the flight to Port Elizabeth. On arrival you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay - stay an extra few nights if you prefer. Port Elizabeth is a relaxed town with a great beach, and makes a good starting point to your itinerary.
Day 6 - Port Elizabeth to Knysna
Collect your car from the Port Elizabeth depot - costs include a Toyota Corolla or similar, although there’s a good selection of options available. From Port Elizabeth it’s around a 3 hour drive to Knysna, but with lots to see and do on the way. Stop for coffee in pretty Jeffrey Bay before continuing to the beautiful Tsitsikamma area, perhaps taking in some of the magnificent forest and coastal scenery on a hike - be sure to stop briefly at Bloukrans Bridge, a spectacular crossing of a deep river valley, with perhaps a final stop of the day in Plettenberg Bay before arriving in to Knysna. Check in to your chosen hotel for a three night stay.
Driving is fairly straightforward in South Africa, with well maintained roads which are generally fairly quiet outside of the main towns. Driving is on the left and most laws and customs are familiar to UK drivers. Do bear in mind that all drivers will need a valid drivers licence plus the DVLA online code and printout, along with a credit card in the name of the main driver for deposit purposes. Other T&C’s apply - just ask for details!
Days 7-8 - Knysna
Consider taking a day off driving today and perhaps head to the water - Knysna Lagoon is a beautiful area and boat trips are popular here. Alternatively, sample some of Knysna’s renowned food in one of the numerous restaurants. Next day spend a little longer exploring the Garden Route around Knysna.
Day 9 - Knysna to Oudtshoorn
From Knysna head along the coast to George and inland to Oudtshoorn (approx 1.5 hours), perhaps stopping in Wilderness to see if you can spot any dolphins in the sea. Alternatively, head inland via the scenic Route 62 and Prince Alfred’s Pass (approx 3 hours) for a more diverse route. On arrival, check in to your hotel for a two night stay. Oudtshoorn is the unofficial ostrich capital of the world - the birds have been reared here since the 1870’s and gave the town its wealth.
Day 10 - Oudtshoorn
Spend a day in and around Oudtshoorn - first stop for many visitors is the Cango Caves, just to the north of town, and one of the most popular attractions in South Africa. There are also numerous ostrich farms on Oudtshoorn, where you can try your hand at ostrich-riding!
Day 11 - Oudtshoorn to the Winelands
It’s a fairly long drive today from Oudtshoorn to the Winelands (approx 4.5-5 hours), with some beautiful scenery to take in on the way - head via Montagu and the spectacular Cogman’s Kloof Gorge, for example. On arrival, check in to your hotel for a two night stay.
Day 12 - Winelands
Spend the next few days exploring the beautiful Winelands area. Get to know the three towns of the Winelands area - Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. The whole region is a foodie paradise so be sure to check out some of the superb restaurants.
Day 13 - The Winelands to Cape Town
This morning head to Cape Town from the Winelands - the direct drive can be done in an hour but we’d really recommend travelling via the penguins at Boulder Beach and the beautiful Cape Peninsula, taking in Hout Bay, the Cape of Good Hope - this should take around 3 hours, plus stops. On arrival, drop your car off at the local depot and make your way to your chosen hotel for a three night stay - this is flexible, of course!
We generally don’t suggest you have a car in Cape Town as the traffic can get a little busy, parking can be tricky and most things are easy to get to. If you’d prefer to keep your car for your full duration, in Cape Town however, just let us know and we can arrange this for you!
Days 14-15 - Cape Town
Spend the next few days exploring Cape Town, one of our favourite cities. We highly recommend taking the cable car up Table Mountain for incredible views of the city, but as the summit is often covered by the cloud our top tip is to head up the moment it’s clear.
Day 16 - Return
Transfer from your hotel to Cape Town airport, and check in for your flight back to the UK.
