SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 - UK to Durban
Fly from London to Durban, arriving next day.
Day 2 - Durban
On arrival in to Durban airport you’ll be met and transferred to your chosen accommodation, for a three night stay - we have a wide range of places to stay, and different durations are also available so if you’d like a shorter or longer stay, just ask!
Days 3-4 - Durban
Spend the next few days exploring Durban. This is one of South Africa’s most cosmopolitan and relaxed cities, with plenty to see and do - we’d recommend taking in some of the city’s museums in the city centre, heading to the beach for a spot of people-watching, or seeing if there’s a match on at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (or bungee jumping off the roof if there isn’t!)
Day 5 - Durban to Howick
This morning collect your car - costs include a Toyota Corolla or similar, although there’s a good selection of options available. Howick makes a good stopping point between Durban and the Drakensberg Mountians area, and the journey from the coast to here is around 1.5 hours. Make a stop in Pietermaritzburg, the best-preserved Victoria city in South Africa, and spend a little while walking around the city centre. We’d also recommend a quick detour to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, where the scenery is almost as pretty as the name. On arrival in to Howick check in to your hotel for a one night stay.
Driving is fairly straightforward in South Africa, with well maintained roads which are generally fairly quiet outside of the main towns. Driving is on the left and most laws and customs are familiar to UK drivers. Do bear in mind that all drivers will need a valid drivers licence plus the DVLA online code and printout, along with a credit card in the name of the main driver for deposit purposes. Other T&C’s apply - just ask for details!
Day 6 - Howick to Drakensberg
Today head for the Drakensberg Mountains - the drive from Howick is around two hours, but for a longer, more rewarding route head to the central section of Drakensberg, in to the Giant’s Castle area of the park (approx 4.5 hours total). On arrival in to the Drakensberg Mountains check in to your hotel for a two night stay.
Day 7 - Drakensberg
Spend a day exploring the stunning uKhMweni Valleyahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage site and the country’s premier mountain wilderness - the scenery here is spectacular. The Cathedral Peak area offers particularly good hiking routes, best generally in spring or autumn. The Drakensberg overall can have quite extreme weather - summer tends to be best for hiking but sees the most rainfall, while winter sees heavy frosts, and snow has been recorded on the highest peaks every month of the year. Bring good footwear and wet weather gear if you’re exploring on foot.
Day 8 - Drakensberg to the Battlefields
Today leave the Drakensberg Mountains behind and head in to the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s Battlefields, where a series of battles in the 1800’s changed this area. Today this area is marked with battle sites, and it’s worth picking up an audio guide to explain things in more detail. Tonight is at Isanlwana, known as the site of the worst British defeat in Colonial history. Thankfully, the area is much more welcoming today.
Day 9 - Battlefields to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi
Today it’s around a 4 hour drive to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi area, and we’d suggest heading straight here from Isandlwana as this area is a real treat. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is one of the best wildlife areas in South Africa, and while it’s only one twentieth of the size of Kruger, many consider it to be better. On arrival, check in to your lodge for a two night stay.
Day 10 - Hluhluwe-Imfolozi
Spend today exploring the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi area with its rich wildlife, and is probably the best place in the world for rhinos - both black and white, Take care if you;re driving through the park yourself as it’s generally unfenced. Close by, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is also worth visiting - this World Heritage site is one of the most fascinating wetland areas in South Africa.
Day 11 - Hluhluwe-Imfolozi to the Dolphin Coast
It’s around a three hour drive past St Lucia to the Dolphin Coast, a stretch of resorts and beaches to the north of Durban where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are perfect for bottle-nosed dolphins. Check in to your hotel and relax for a three night stay - durations are flexible, of course.
Days 12-13 - Dolphin Coast
Spend a few days relaxing on the beautiful Dolphin Coast.
Day 14 - Return
Drive back to Durban airport (approx 45 minutes), drop your car off and check in for your flight back to the UK.
