Self-Drive holidays in Namibia

Namibia is a superb destination for a self-drive holiday, with huge open spaces, spectacular scenery that’s different at every turn, quiet roads and so much to see. You may easily clock up 2000+ miles over the course of a two week trip, but its generally easy going and hugely rewarding.

Around half of the distance you’re likely to cover will be on tarred roads, which link most of the main destinations. These roads tend to be quiet (you’ll only come across much traffic in Windhoek and between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund - but even then it’s hardly the M25!) and you will cover distances in good time, averaging around 110-120 km/h on the open road.

Most other roads are gravel roads, with unmade surfaces. On these roads you’ll average nearer 70-80km/h, but take things easy to avoid any problems. Keep an eye out for pockets of sand or gravel that can make your wheels spin, and in wildlife-rich area you’ll also need to look out for animals at the side of the road - warthogs are a particular problem, although they do tend to run away from you rather than towards you! Gravel roads tend to be wider than tar roads, and you can often travel a long distance without seeing another vehicle, so make sure you include some gravel roads in your itinerary as they’re quite an experience.

You’ll need a sensibly-sized vehicle for a trip to Namibia - nothing too small. Some itineraries will benefit from a 4x4, but these aren’t essential on many routes - in fact, if you haven’t driven a 4x4 in fairly unusual conditions before you may get in to trouble if you have a vehicle that’s too big to handle! Wherever you are in Namibia, keep your petrol topped up, map to hand and sense of adventure with you!
