What to do in Mombasa

Mombasa is a great place to chill out and do nothing, and works perfectly after an active safari especially. There’s plenty to see and do if you want to explore though - Mombasa City makes a fascinating experience, with a long history of trading and slaves. Visit Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese, and the Old Town, with it's array of shops and markets. If you haven’t been on safari then it’s easy to head inland from the coast to some of the nearby national parks for your fill of wildlife. Mombasa’s North Coast tends to offer more in the way of activities, restaurants and nightlife, while the South Coast is perfect for chilling out on the beach or by the pool.

Where to stay in Mombasa

There's a good selection of beach hotels in Mombasa, ranging from simple properties for the budget-conscious to luxurious five star options. On the North Coast the main beach area is at Bamburi, where the beach is lively and there's plenty to do, while the heart of the South Coast is Diani Beach, where there are a few local facilities and the beach goes on for miles!

Holiday ideas in Mombasa

Spend a week or two relaxing in one of Mombasa's excellent hotels, or opt for a safari plus beach holiday, following the excitement of a safari in Kenya with the relaxation of the Indian Ocean beaches. It's even possible to split your beach break between the North and South Coasts! For a shorter safari experience, try our 2 and 3 night safari excursions from the coast.
