A traditional seven-night safari visiting Samburu, home to unique wildlife, followed by the Rift Valley Lakes where thousands of pink flamingoes often tint the horizon. The final destination is the Masai Mara where vast numbers of plains game and spectacular big cats abide.
Day 1 - Depart
Fly from Heathrow to Nairobi, arriving next day. Regional departures from around the UK are also available.
Day 2 - Aberdares
On arrival into Nairobi you will be met and taken to the Safari Lounge, where you can shower and grab a coffee before departing for the Aberdares (180 km - approximately 4 hours). Arrive in time for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing, or join one of the activities - bird watching or head out with the resident Naturalist. Overnight: Aberdare Country Club (lunch and dinner included).
Day 3 - Samburu
Head across the equator to the Samburu National Reserve (190 km - approximately 4 hours). Samburu - named after the residents - is home to a host of birds and unique wildlife. Your stay is at the Ashnil Samburu Camp, well located along the shady banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, under a thick stand of doum palms and acacia trees that are a feature of the area. Lunch before a late afternoon game drive. Overnight: Ashnil Samburu Camp (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Day 4 - Samburu
Morning and late afternoon game drives in this open savannah which is traversed by the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river is inhabited by hippos and crocodiles, whilst the park is home to a host of animals including many speciese not seen elsewhere - Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffes and long-necked gerenuks are amongst these. Overnight: Ashnil Samburu Camp (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Day 5 - Aberdares
Drive to your lodge in time for lunch (240 km - approximately 4 hours), hopefully seeing wildlife en route. Spend the afternoon viewing game from the lodge, or join a nature walk led by a local guide (payable locally and weather permitting). Overnight: Serena Mountain Lodge (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Day 6 - Lake Nakuru-Lake Naivasha
After breakfast, descend into the Great Rift Valley and continue to Lake Nakuru Lodge (240 km - approximately 4 hours) for lunch. Lake Nakuru is surrounded by woody and bushy grassland, and a game reserve has been created where the endangered black rhino is protected and may be seen along with antelope, giraffes, lions and hyenas. On the lake,thousands of pink flamingoes can be seen. Afternoon game drive in the national park. Drive to Lake Naivasha (80 km - approximately 1 hour). 450 species of birds have have been recorded in and around this freshwater lake Overnight: Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Day 7 - Masai Mara
Drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve (320 km - approximately 5.5 hours). Arrive in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive. This wildlife theatre hosts the Big 5 and a multitude of plains game. Here you stay in the impressive Ashnil Mara Camp, which has an unrivalled position for wildlife spotting, and is close to the action during the annual wildebeest migration. Overnight: Ashnil Mara Camp (lunch and dinner included).
Day 8 - Masai Mara
Enjoy an early morning game drive with further opportunities to see the incredible wildlife, followed by breakfast at the lodge, or take an early morning balloon flight over the Mara followed by a 'bubbly' bush breakfast (optional extra). A second game drive will take place in the late afternoon. Overnight: Ashnil Mara Camp (lunch and dinner included).
Day 9 - Depart
After breakfast, return to Nairobi by road (300 km - 5 hours), or fly from the Masai Mara to Nairobi: morning flight (price on request); lunch in the Masai Mara and afternoon flight (price on request) (breakfast included).
This is a group itinerary which operates with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 passengers, all guaranteed a window seat.
On occasion the itinerary may operate in a different order, or different lodges used according to availability and road conditions.
