Suggested sightseeing

West Bank tour

This tour from Luxor will take you to the Valley of the Kings, where new tombs are still being discovered. The tombs belong to the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, including Ramses the Great and Tutankhamen. Discover the Valley of the Queens, which contains around 70 tombs of queens, princesses and nobles. Finally explore the unique Temple at Deir El Bahari with its beautiful murals on the inner walls, built for the great Queen Hatshepsut.

- Prices from £45 per person

The Temples of Abu Simbel

From Aswan, enjoy a 30-minute flight south to Abu Simbel, an archaeological site on the banks of Lake Nasser. During this group tour, you’ll discover the Great Temple and four colossal statues of Ramses II. Around 22 February and 22 October – allegedly the king’s birthday and coronation – the sun’s rays strike through the temple, illuminating the inner shrine. Find out how Abu Simbel’s temples were moved during the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the unbelievable skill used to carve these monuments.

- Prices from £65 per person

Luxor is home to the real treasures of Egypt - an ancient town that's had a place in Egypt's long history, Luxor now has more relics from Egypt's grand days than anywhere else in the Country - comparisons to an 'open air museum' are truly justified. Further south, Aswan has a laid-back feel and is perfect for a more relaxed stay.

What to do in Luxor & Aswan

A holiday to Luxor really is full of interest, and any visitor must take in some of the amazing, world renowned sites. From the Temples of Karnak and Luxor in the town itself to the treasures of the West Bank, including the Colossi of Memnon, the magnificent Temple of Hapshetsut and the amazing Valley of the Kings, sightseeing is the main activity for holidaymakers in Luxor. A holiday in Aswan is a great base for exploring Upper Egypt's highlights, including the Temple of Abu Simbel and Philae Temple.

Where to stay in Luxor & Aswan

Hotels in Luxor are mainly around the town centre and close to the banks of the Nile to the north and south of the centre. Options for hotels in Aswan are more limited, but standards remain high.

Holiday ideas to Luxor & Aswan

Luxor can be visited for a week or two, staying in one of the town's excellent hotels, or it can be combined with a week on the beach at either Hurghada or El Gouna, 4 hours away on the shores of the Red Sea. Alternatively, start with a few nights in Cairo and then move on to Luxor, or follow a Nile cruise with some time in the Town.
