Holidays to the Garden Route
Stretching along the coast from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east, the Garden Route is one of the best known journeys in the Southern Hemisphere, and for good reason. Here you will find secluded coves, quaint coastal towns plus rivers, lakes and forests. Inland and making up a vast region of the Western Cape Province, Route 62 and the Karoo is an area of wide open spaces, mountain ranges, quaint Victorian country towns and ‘Big 5’ game viewing.

What to do on the Garden Route
It’s all about the scenery on the Garden Route so allow plenty of time to take it all in - having your own car really opens things up here. Take a boat trip on the lagoon at Knysna, watch dolphins in the surf at Wilderness, ride an ostrich inland at Oudtshoorn or hike a trail in Tsitkikamma. Then there’s the fabulous food and great value wine, of course!
Where to stay on the Garden Route
There’s a wide selection of hotel options along the Garden Route in most towns, with Knysna, George and Plettenberg Bay having most options. Inland, Oudtshoorn has a good selection of accommodation. Many properties in this area are small and individual, combining charm and character with personal service.
Holiday ideas to the Garden Route
A fly-drive is by far the best way to take in the Garden Route - start in Port Elizabeth and head west towards Cape Town, or vice versa. If you prefer to reduce driving distances it’s worth considering flying between George and Cape Town and just focusing on the heart of the Garden Route, although this will skip highlights such as Arniston and Hermanus!
