Polonnaruwa
(from Sigiriya)
Polonnaruwa was an ancient city, and the second capital of Sri Lanka, following the destruction of Anuradhapura. Here you will find an enchanting array of temple ruins which have been abandoned to the surrounding forest. Whilst here, you can wander freely through the ruins and visit the museum where you can discover the city’s past. Be sure to keep your shoulders, chest and upper legs covered and when entering the temples you should remove your shoes.

Learn about the cultivation of the tea leaves – one of Sri Lanka’s most famous exports, pluck your own leaves and enjoy tastings to appreciate the difference in strength and flavour of the leaves. Holidays to Sri Lanka
The ‘resplendent isle’ of Sri Lanka is a magical destination, with its beautiful beaches making it a perfect destination for a relaxing beach holiday, while way from the coast, Sri Lanka's real charm and interest becomes apparent. The beaches of Sri Lanka are glorious, but combining them with a few days or longer inland makes this a really special destination. Highlights for me include the Pinnawela elephant orphanage, Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the stunning scenery of the southern areas, but its the warmth and friendliness of the people that makes Sri Lanka a real gem!
What to do in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches are perfect for a week or two of relaxation, and with many hotels offering a wide range of facilities, often with spa and health treatments available, why leave your hotel?! Sri Lanka's interior breaks down in to three main areas - historical, cultural and scenic. The historical areas focus around stunning Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and can easily be explored with our multicentre holidays. Kandy is the heart of Cultural Sri Lanka, home to the famed Temple of the Tooth and included on many of our escorted tours, while Nuwara Eilya is Sri Lanka's best known hill resort and a great base for scenic exploring. Don't forget to visit the wonderful Pinnawella Elephant Orphanage too!
Where to stay in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's beach hotels range from simple and friendly for the budget-conscious to luxurious and unique, for the discerning traveller. Most beach hotels are on the west coast of the island on the stretch from Negombo to Galle, with many centered around the resorts of Bentota - such as the Club Bentota and Centara Ceysands - and Beruwela. Inland Sri Lanka has a good range of hotel options in all the main locations of interest, including Sigiriya for exploring the history of the North, Kandy to explore this cultural gem, plus the hills around Nuwara Eliya for Sri Lanka's wilder side.
Holiday ideas to Sri Lanka
The beaches of Sri Lanka are perfect for a relaxing beach holiday, or why not combine the beaches with other parts of this fascinating country, either on an escorted tour of Sri Lanka or a multicentre holiday combining different locations, or with one of our superb private car and driver itineraries. Sri Lanka can also be combined with other countries such as Sri Lanka and the Maldives - just ask for your perfect itinerary! With most options durations are flexible, so it's up to you where you visit and for how long.
