Japan’s rail network is just about the best in the world, with fast, regular, comfortable and reliable links to most parts of the country, including its flagship Shinkansen ‘bullet’ high speed trains. The network really comes in to its own, however, with the specially-designed rail pass that is purely for overseas visitors - all our exploring holidays include one of these passes to really allow you to make the most of your time in this fascinating country.

Your Japan Railways (JR) Pass allows you unlimited rail travel on almost all JR trains through the country, for either 7, 14 or 21 days - for many itineraries a 7-day pass works well as they really come in to their own on long distance routes, so there’s no need to have a longer pass if you’re just using local transport in your first or last city. As soon as you arrive in Japan you can make reservations on most of your future journeys, and the JR Pass even includes some local buses and even the ferry to Miyajima!

Main Japanese stations are cities in themselves, and are great places to eat and shop - as well as catching a train! With signs and announcements in English and friendly staff available, it’s a straightforward way to get around.
