After your visit you’ll head back to the city for a visit to the Nallur Kovil Temple, Jaffna Library and Jaffna Museum. After lunch continue on to the Springs of Keerimalai, which are said to promote healing and a sense of wellbeing and Dambakola Patuna Port. Stay: Heritage Hotel (dinner included).

Day 3: Jaffna to Trincomalee

After breakfast you’ll move on to Trincomalee. After checking in to your hotel, you will enjoy a tour of Fort Frederick, the Koneswaram Temple, Swami Rock and the War Cemetery. Stay: Chaaya Blu (dinner included).

Day 4: Trincomalee to Kandalama

Today drive to the Cultural Triangle for a three night stay. After lunch at a local restaurant in Dambulla, embark on an excursion to the 12th Century Sinhalese capital, Polonnaruwa, to see the ruins of the Royal Palace and Gal Vihara. Here you’ll see the three giant Buddha statues carved out of rock. Stay: Heritance Kandalama (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 5: Kandalama

After breakfast, depart for the rock fortress at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya. Meaning ‘Lion Rock’, this is Sri Lanka’s most visited attraction where in years gone by a giant stone lion greeted visitors at the gateway to the palace. Today, only the lion’s huge paws remain but there are also beautiful landscaped gardens and colourful frescoes. If you’re feeling active, then opt to climb up the 1200 steps to the summit and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views.

This afternoon, travel to Minneriya National Park where you can hope to spot elephants, leopards and monkeys, as well as various birds and butterflies. It’s worth bringing binoculars for up-close sightings. Stay: Heritance Kandalama (breakfast included).

Day 6: Kandalama

The ancient capitalof Anuradhapura awaits this morning, where you can visit the Buddha shrines. After lunch at your own arrangement, continue on to the Dambulla rock cave temple to view some of the finest preserved ancient frescoes. The site has been in use for over 22 centuries, when it was occupied by a Buddhist monastic establishment following the arrival of Buddhism on the island. Remains of 80 rock-shelter residences established at that time on the site have been identified. There are also numerous carvings, paintings and statues to be found within its caves. Stay: Heritance Kandalama (breakfast included).

Day 7: Kandalama to Kandy
Rise early today and travel to Hiriwaduna Village for a nature trek to a nearby reservoir inhabited by diverse birdlife. Your next stop will be Matale and a visit to a local spice garden before a traditional Kamatha lunch at the Ranweli Spice Garden. Continue on to Kandy for a two night stay. This royal city enjoys a pretty lakeside setting and beautiful views, and has plenty of shopping and sightseeing opportunities. This evening, experience a Kandyan dance and cultural show. Stay: Earl’s Regency (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 8: Kandy

After breakfast, travel to Peradeniya for a visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Covering 60 hectares, the gardens’ attractions include an orchid collection, a giant Javan fig tree and a spice garden. This afternoon you’ll visit the famous Temple of the Tooth that houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – Buddha’s tooth. You’ll also visit a gem and jewellery factory and showroom. Stay: Earl’s Regency (breakfast and dinner included).

Day 9: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Today offers the opportunity to travel from Kandy to Nanu Oya by train, followed by a drive to the colonial hill station of Nuwara Eliya, situated 6000 feet above sea level with views of green hillsides and tea plantations. En route, stop off to visit a tea plantation and non-working factory and soak up the views. Stay: Heritance Tea Factory (breakfast and dinner included).

Day 10: Nuwara Eliya

Travel to the Horton Plains this morning – a national park home to wildlife including sambhar deer, leopard, birds and monkeys. Enjoy a full morning here, with a packed breakfast, before returning to Nuwara Eliya for an afternoon at leisure. Time permitting, choose to join an optional excursion to the botanical gardens in Hakgala. This evening, you’ll experience high tea in the gardens of St Andrews. Stay: Heritance Tea Factory  (breakfast and dinner included).

Day 11: Nuwara Eliya to Yala

After breakfast depart for Udawalawe National Park. You’ll have lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the Elephant Transit Home. The home caters for orphaned young elephants and raises them until they are old enough to be released back into the wild. Visitors aren’t allowed to interact with the elephants with the view that preventing them from becoming used to humans will help protect them from poachers once they are back in the wild. Carry on to Yala for a two night stay. Stay: Jetwing Yala (breakfast, lunch and dinner included).

Day 12: Yala

There’s the opportunity for time at leisure at the hotel this morning. After lunch, travel to Yala National Park where free-roaming wildlife includes wild elephants, crocodiles and deer. With the highest density of leopards in Sri Lanka, keep your eyes peeled to spot one of these elusive creatures. Stay: Jetwing Yala (breakfast and dinner included).

Day 13: Yala

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward journey or leave for Galle to visit the Dutch Fort and enjoy lunch at Lady Hill before

transferring to one of Sri Lanka’s beach resorts or further afield (breakfast and lunch included).
