This tour takes in Cuba’s must-see attractions, including the vibrant city of
Havana, Viñales Valley and the colonial town of Trinidad. Your second week
will be spent in Varadero, Cuba’s premier beach resort, for relaxation,
watersports and the occasional daiquiri!
Havana: 4 nights
Guamá: 1 night
Trinidad: 1 night
Cienfuegos: 1 night
Varadero: 7 nights
DAY 1 Arrival
After you land at Varadero Airport we’ll take you
to the Tryp Habana Libre Hotel, in Havana, where
you’ll stay for the first of three nights in the Cuban
capital. When it comes to dinnertime you can grab
a bite to eat at the hotel, or head into town and
find your own favourite place to eat.
DAY 2 Havana
You’ve got all day in the Caribbean’s trendiest city
and you’ll need it. This capital of pastel-coloured
buildings, little squares and parks is packed with
sights and places to visit. For a start, you’ve got
the castle-like Havana Cathedral, partly built from
sea coral, and the super cool Malecon. This seven
kilometre stretch of sea wall is where Havana folk
come to work, play and chill-out and it’s great for
a peek of what the city is all about. You’ll take in
Revolution Square where Che Guevara rallied the
masses during the Cuban revolution. In the
evening you’ve got time to check out the nightlife,
have a drink at Ernest Hemingway’s favourite spot,
La Bodeguita del Medio, or go for a dance at one
of the many jazz bars.
DAY 3 Viñales Valley
Leaving the city behind for the day you’ll head to
the hills. The Vinales Valley is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and you’ll soon see why. Your first
stop is at the Los Jazmines Hotel where you’ll have
time to enjoy amazing views over the green
countryside and spot the small, occasional,
farmer’s cottage down below. After that, there’s a
boat trip through the Caves of the Indian - a dark
grotto of stalactites and stalagmites. And you can
check out Cuban artist Leovigildo Gonzalez’s huge
and colourful mural painting on the side of a cliff.
You’ll have lunch in a restaurant before heading
back to Havana for the evening.
DAY 4 Train Museum
This one’s not just for train spotters. It’s a really
fascinating dip into Cuba’s past through the story
of its railroad - the first in Latin America when it
opened in 1837. The museum has old trains, such
as Braithwaite steam engines designed and
brought over from the British Isles, signalling
equipment, photos and loads of other bits and
bobs about trains. You’ll have lunch in a nearby
restaurant before going back to your hotel. The
afternoon is yours to spend bartering for bargains
in the local street market.
DAY 5 Guamá in Montemar Great
Natural Park
You’ll wave goodbye to Havana as you move
though rural Cuba on to Montemar National Park.
It’s home to one of the biggest swamps in the
Caribbean and a place of forests, lagoons, canals
and flooded caverns. It also has more than 900
species of plants and over 160 different types of
birds. After lunch you’ll visit the park’s crocodile
farm to meet the big reptiles and get up close to
some of their babies. Then it’s time for the
Treasure Lagoon - a fresh water reservoir with its
own replica Taino village showing the life of Cuba’s
first inhabitants. Later you’ll be taken to Rancho
Hatuey Hotel for dinner* and an overnight stay.
DAY 6 Trinidad
In Trinidad, time seems to have stood still since
the colonial era. It’s another UNESCO World
Heritage site, and horse-drawn carriages take
visitors around the 500-year-old town. Places you
won’t want to miss include the Santisima
Cathedral and the history museum. At lunchtime,
head to the Plaza Mayor, Trinidad’s centre, where
slaves were brought in the 18th-century to work at
the nearby Valle de los Ingenios. After lunch, visit
to the pottery workshops before going to the
Brisas Trinidad del Mar Hotel for the night.
DAY 7 Cienfuegos
It’s another busy day as your Cuban adventure
draws to a close. First up, visit the botanical
gardens, where there are more than 2,000 plants.
After lunch you’ve got time to explore the town to
take in the seafront promenade, the gothic-style
Palacio de Valle and Castillo de Jagua. This huge
fortress was built in the 18th-century to protect
the island from pirates. After sightseeing you’ll
head to the Jagua Hotel for the final night of the tour.
DAY 8-15 Varadero
Depart for Varadero and your chosen beach hotel for
the second week of your holiday.
DAY 15 Transfer to Varadero airport for the return overnight flight to the UK.
