The mountainous area of northern Indochina is home to a number of distinct ethnic groups that have maintained a traditional lifestyle. These hilltribe minorities all have their own particular customs and traditions and visiting their villages provides a very special insight into their unique lifestyles. This fascinating three night trip takes you through the spectacular countryside north of Luang Prabang to visit and learn about the H’mong, Khmu and Lanten minorities.

Group four day tour from Luang Prabang. Includes return transfers, accommodation and sightseeing as detailed, all meals from lunch on Day 1 to lunch on Day 4.

DAY 1 Transfer to the local pier in Luang Prabang where you will board a traditional boat for a journey upstream on the Mekong River to Pakbeng. Stop en route to visit the sacred Buddha caves, Tham Ting and Tham Phoum housing hundreds of Buddha statues. Overnight at the Pakbeng Lodge.

DAY 2 From Pakbeng continue overland towards Oudomxai passing through the beautiful landscape dotted with small H’mong and Khmu villages. Arrive into Oudomxai and climb That Phouxay for panoramic views over the town and its surroundings. Continuing north, the road gets more and more mountainous with H’mong villages built along the crests. There will be the chance to stop and visit some of these villages before arriving in Luang Namtha early evening. Dinner and overnight at the Boat Landing Guesthouse.

DAY 3 Depending on water levels (an alternative will be arranged during the dry season January to May ) cruise down the Nam Tha River for two hours exploring the daily life of the different minority tribes. Your guide will explain to you the customs of each of the tribes and you will have the chance to visit a Khmu tribe and Sop Dud village (Lanten tribe).

DAY 4 Return overland to Luang Prabang passing through the beautiful scenery of mountains, villages and rice fields.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All Tours Suitable walking shoes, waterproofs, sunscreen, insect repellent, toilet paper, torch light, change of clothes, soap, towel, swimsuit and a sense of adventure are needed. Tours to the regions are limited to a small number of tourists and it is advisable to book early. An overnight stay in the respective city is recommended before your tour starts.
