DAY 1
South African Airways overnight flight to
Durban, via Johannesburg.
DAY 2
On arrival you are transferred to the
Southern Sun Elangeni hotel for time
to refresh yourself in the fresh sea air
before an overnight stay.
DAY 3
After breakfast your tour guide and vehicle
will collect you for your 3½ hour drive north
east into the heart of Zululand and the
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. Reputed
to be South Africa’s oldest and certainly
one of the best for Rhino spotting in
particular, it is home to all the ‘Big 5’ as
well as numerous plains game and birdlife.
Embark on an afternoon open vehicle game
drive in the reserve in search of the
predators, giraffes and elephants amongst
others, before returning to Hilltop Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 4
Enjoy a full day in the wonderful
atmosphere of the African bush at Hilltop
Camp, including breakfast, dinner and one
open vehicle game drive in the reserve.
DAY 5
A long day on the road today begins after
breakfast with a journey south to
Shakaland where you can embark on an
optional tour of this cultural village, learning
about the traditions and customs of the
Zulu people. Continue on Greytown, often
referred to as the ‘jewel of Kwa-Zulu Natal’,
lying in the forest-clad, rolling hills of the
Natal Midlands, a picturesque little town
originally settled during the 1850s and
awash with buildings of note, scenic drives
and Boer history. You arrive in Bergville in
the famed Battlefields area with some time
at leisure until dinner at the Sandford Park
Country Hotel where you spend the
next two nights.
DAY 6
Today embark on a full day tour of the
Battlefields, learning about the historic and
tragic conflicts between the Zulus, British
and Boers together with a specialist
battlefield guide. Highlights today include
the Battle of Colenso & Battle of Spion
Kop, the Seige of Ladysmith and the Battle
of Blood River. Return to Sandford Park for
dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 7
After breakfast head south west to the
base of the magnificent Sani Pass, gateway
to the Roof of Africa in the heart of the
Drakensberg mountains. An area of
amazing natural beauty with craggy
mountain tops contrasting with lush rolling
countryside below, where walking, hiking
and biking are particularly popular. Arrive at
the Sani Pass hotel where have the
remainder of the afternoon at leisure to
perhaps enjoy the nearby facilities
including a 9-hole golf course, walking and
hiking trails, quad biking, horse riding and a
wellness centre (all at own cost). Dinner
and overnight is at the Sani Pass Hotel.
DAY 8
This morning begin climbing the Sani Pass,
the highest in Southern Africa, in 4x4
vehicles. The views here are utterly
spectacular and make a lasting impression.
At the top is the border post between
South Africa and Lesotho, (remember your
passport) and once inside the small
kingdom visit a tribal village and interact
with the local people before enjoying a
hearty lunch at the highest pub in Africa.
Perched right near the edge of the
mountain, it has few rivals in terms of pub
views! Wind your way back down the
mountain and return to the hotel with the
remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
DAY 9
After breakfast return to Durban, stopping
at Howick Falls en route, before connecting
with your South African Airways overnight
flight to Heathrow, via Johannesburg. |
