Enjoy South Africa at its best with this incredible 13-night fly-drive, combining a safari staying in luxury accommodation, the beautiful Garden Route, the Winelands and fabulous Cape Town.

Day 1 - UK to Port Elizabeth

Fly from London to Port Elizabeth, arriving next day.

Day 2 - Port Elizabeth

On arrival in to Port Elizabeth we’ll have your hire car waiting for you, but you’ll start with a night in Port Elizabeth itself, rather than driving too far on day one - starting in Port Elizabeth and working your way towards Cape Town works best as the roads get gradually busier in this direction so starting in Port Elizabeth is more gentle. Spend the night at The Beach Hotel - Port Elizabeth is located at one end of the Garden Route, and is a friendly beachfront town that makes a perfect location to start a Garden Route itinerary.

Day 3 -  Port Elizabeth to the Eastern Cape Game Reserves

Depart Port Elizabeth and drive to your Eastern Cape Game Reserve (approx 1.5-2 hours), for a three night stay at the fabulous Pumba Water Lodge. Arrive in good time for your afternoon game drive.

Driving is fairly straightforward in South Africa, with well maintained roads which are generally fairly quiet outside of the main towns. Driving is on the left and most laws and customs are familiar to UK drivers. Do bear in mind that all drivers will need a valid drivers licence plus the DVLA online code and printout, along with a credit card in the name of the main driver for deposit purposes. Other T&C’s apply - just ask for details!

Days 4-5 - Eastern Cape Game Reserves

Spend the next few days on safari - park up your car as you’re in the hands of the experts, with morning and afternoon game drives in the reserve to see as much wildlife as possible. Many of the game reserves are home to the ‘big 5’, so expect superb wildlife sighting and a real thrill.

Day 6 - Eastern Cape Game Reserves to Knysna

From the game reserves of the Eastern Cape it’s around a 4 hour drive to Knysna, but with lots to see and do on the way. Stop for coffee in pretty Jeffreys Bay before continuing to the beautiful Tsitsikamma area, perhaps taking in some of the magnificent forest and coastal scenery on a hike. Be sure to stop briefly at Bloukrans Bridge, a spectacular crossing of a deep river valley, with perhaps a final stop of the day in Plettenberg Bay before arriving in to Knysna and the St James of Knysna for a two night stay.

Day 7 - Knysna

Consider taking a day off driving today and perhaps head to the water - Knysna Lagoon is a beautiful area and boat trips are popular here. Alternatively, sample some of Knysna’s renowned food in one of the numerous restaurants. Next day spend a little longer exploring the Garden Route around Knysna - perhaps return to Tsitsikamma to explore this beautiful region on foot.

Day 8 - Knysna to Montagu

Drive from the Garden Route to Montagu via George, Mossel Bay and Swellendam, a journey of around 3.5 hours plus stopping time. Montagu is a small town in the Western Cape and makes a good point to break the journey between west and east. Surrounded by dramatic scenery, the town itself has plenty of interest and maintains a Victorian charm – there’s renowned rock climbing for the adventurous, or hot springs for the less so. Spend a night at the Mimosa Lodge in the town.

Day 9 - Montagu to Hermanus

Drive from Montagu to Hermanus, a journey of around 4 hours 30 mins if you go the long way round via Cogman’s Kloof, Cape Agulhas and Gansbaai– less than 2 hours if you go direct. A small, charming town, Hermanus is world-renowned for whale watching at certain times of year, and makes a good option on the way between Cape Town and the Garden Route. With excellent beaches and beautiful scenery close by and the added draw of whales and sharks, Hermanus is well worth incorporating in to a South Africa itinerary. Spend the night at the Auberge Burgundy Guesthouse in the centre of town.

Day 10 - Hermanus to the Winelands

It’s around a 90 minute drive from the heart of the Whale Coast at Hermanus to Stellenbosch and the Winelands, although the 2 hour route via the penguins at Betty’s Bay and around False Bay would be our suggestion. On arrival in to the Winelands check in to the Spier Hotel for a two night stay.

Day 11 - Winelands

Spend the day exploring the beautiful Winelands area. Explore the three towns of the Winelands area - Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl - or park up and try some of the world-renowned wine at one of the many wineries that are open for visitors.

Day 12 -  The Winelands to Cape Town

This morning head to Cape Town from the Winelands - the direct drive can be done in an hour but we’d really recommend travelling via the penguins at Boulder Beach and the beautiful Cape Peninsula, taking in Hout Bay, the Cape of Good Hope - this should take around 3 hours, plus stops. On arrival, drop your car off at the local depot and make your way to the Bantry Bay Suite Hotel for a three night stay - this is flexible, of course!

Days 13-14 - Cape Town

Spend the next few days exploring Cape Town. Perhaps pre-book a Discover Cape Town City Tour - a great introduction to this spectacular city, the Cape Town City Tour provides the perfect opportunity to sample some of its attractions and get your bearings.

We generally don’t suggest you have a car in Cape Town as the traffic can get a little busy, parking can be tricky and most things are easy to get to. If you’d prefer to keep your car for the whole duration in Cape Town, however, just let us know and we can arrange this for you!

Day 15 - Return

Transfer from your hotel to Cape Town airport, and check in for your flight back to the UK.
