The
mighty Amazon and the massive area called Amazonia is one of
the greatest natural areas on earth. The river itself is huge,
being 11 km wide in places and navigable by ocean-going ships
all the way to Peru. The largest body of freshwater in the world
supports 30% of all known plant and animal species, and it's
this huge diversity that brings people here. Reaching Amazonia
is not easy but is extremely rewarding. The
main gateway to the region is Manaus, a large city that was
once one of the richest in the world. Most itineraries to Amazonia
will require a night here before moving on to more remote areas.
It's possible to include a variety of activities into your itinerary,
including Jungle treks, fishing trips, crocodile spotting and
visiting local villages.
